Adult Acne or Hyperplasia?

“When ever I hear the word ‘Breakout,’ I associate it with acne.”- Bryce Dallas Howard

How many of us remember being that awkward teen with braces and pimples?  So sure were we, that if we could survive until adulthood, with its clear skin, all our dreams would fall into place.  Some of us are still waiting.  Or, to our horror, as our age climbs, those pesky little spots return.  However, what we think is adult acne can actually be a condition known as Sebaceous Hyperlasia and how you are treating it with can be making it worse.

Sebaceous Hyperlasia is an abnormality of the sebaceous glands, resulting from hormonal changes that cause a decrease in androgen and a build-up of sebocytes.  Sebocytes are the cells that form the our sebaceous glands and produce oil.  The overabundance of these cells cause the oil gland to become engorged, resulting in benign tumor like cysts.  It is mostly seen in mid-aged, usually fair complected people . It can affect the face, neck, chest, and back areas.

The problem comes when people mistake these lesions for acne blemishes.  Although in some cases, a little bit of oil may be extracted from them, they usually are characterized as small blemishes that are closed with a dimple in the center.  When they are treated aggressively, they can become worse, or it can damage surrounding glands to produce more of these bumps.  Because it is a condition of the gland, not the pore, in order to truly rid the skin of them, the gland itself must be completely destroyed.  This is only done in a medical setting, as skin care professionals can only analyze the skin.  It is a medical provider that will have to diagnose.

So, what can we do to try to prevent the onset and/or manage Sebaceous Hyperlasia?  Along with gentle treatment of the skin and UV protections, using a medicated face wash, such as Lerosett Botanical Acne Cleanser with salicylic acid, is a great place to begin.  Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA’s) have keratolytic action that cleanses the surface of the skin and works deeply down in the pore to unclog impactions and remove dead cells. Gunilla herbal face wash nor-dry-sen

Gunilla’s Brighten and Renew cream can also help to exfoliate dead skin cells, while the Hydroponic aloe soothes and calms the skin.
